Combating climate change has become a priority and an urgent goal of the international community where the European Union and countries such as Italy and France can and should play an important role. Thus decarbonization of primary sources will become an important topic and opportunity for research and development in the increasingly public and private sectors, also thanks to the financing of various national recovery plans.
The massive development of renewable energy sources such as solar thermal, photovoltaic and wind energy remains a priority focus for electricity production to replace fossil fuels. Moreover, it is planned to use electricity on a much larger scale in transportation and to replace combustion in industrial facilities. However, the path towards “all-electrification”, however tempting, requires responding to multiple challenges that put a strain on the existing electricity system.
During the day, significant engineering and management challenges associated with effective integration into the electricity grid of immediately available energy sources, scientific prospects for developing new technologies and long-term “game-changing agents” will be addressed.
The research required to answer these challenges is highly complex: from mathematical models for optimal management of energy flows, big data for consumption and production through to innovative transportation technologies, storage systems and smart grids. The characteristics of renewable energy sources necessarily refer to the presence of advanced electricity networks, extensive storage network, and spare production capacity that can be adjusted at will, for the “sun and windless” moments. Today, in many countries this capacity is ensured by fossil fuels, which must be abandoned “at all costs”. Fourth generation nuclear fission could be an intermediate step, while fusion is inexhaustible energy without waste and without risk of operation or proliferation, but it is questionable how far we are from these two solutions.
These issues will be developed during the Round Table “Research in Low Carbon Energy Service”, with some of the key players in research and development in sectors of interest.
